Cashmere
Animal fibre (luxury)
An ultra-fine, lightweight fibre combed from the undercoat of cashmere goats. Exceptionally soft and warm — a hallmark of premium knitwear.
Origin & Production
Sourced from cashmere goats in Mongolia, China, and parts of Central Asia. The fine undercoat is hand-combed during spring moulting, then de-haired and spun.
Key Properties
- Ultra-soft hand-feel
- 3× warmer than sheep wool
- Lightweight
- Pilling-prone (quality varies widely)
- Biodegradable
Common Uses
Sustainability
Overgrazing by cashmere goats contributes to desertification in Mongolia. Recycled cashmere and Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) standards are emerging solutions.
