Down
Animal fill
Soft, fluffy clusters from the underside of duck or goose plumage. The highest warmth-to-weight ratio of any natural insulator — the benchmark for premium outerwear and bedding.
Origin & Production
Collected from ducks and geese, primarily in China, Hungary, and Poland. Down clusters are separated from feathers, cleaned, and graded by fill power (loft). Responsibly sourced down is certified under RDS or Global TDS.
Key Properties
- Highest warmth-to-weight ratio
- Extremely compressible
- Lightweight
- Breathable
- Loses insulating power when wet
Common Uses
Sustainability
Renewable and biodegradable. Animal welfare is the primary concern — the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) prohibits live-plucking and force-feeding. Recycled down is an emerging circular option.
Care Instructions
Machine wash on delicate cycle at 30 °C with down-specific detergent. No regular detergent — it strips natural oils.
Tumble dry low with clean tennis balls to restore loft. Multiple cycles may be needed.
Never iron down items.
- Store uncompressed to preserve loft
- Use a down-proof shell to prevent feather migration
- Spot clean small stains rather than full washing when possible
