Nylon
Petroleum-based
A strong, elastic synthetic fibre (polyamide). Prized for its durability and stretch — widely used in hosiery, swimwear, and outerwear.
Origin & Production
A polyamide synthesised from petrochemicals. Econyl is a recycled variant made from discarded fishing nets, fabric scraps, and industrial waste.
Key Properties
- Very strong & abrasion-resistant
- Excellent elasticity
- Lightweight
- Quick drying
- Smooth hand-feel
Common Uses
Sustainability
Petroleum-based and energy-intensive to produce. Econyl (regenerated nylon) offers a circular alternative. Microplastic shedding is a concern.
Care Instructions
Machine wash at 30 °C on gentle cycle. Wash dark colours separately.
Hang dry or tumble dry on low. Dries fast naturally.
Low heat (110 °C) if at all needed. Rarely wrinkles.
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure when drying — UV degrades nylon over time
- Chlorine damages nylon — rinse swimwear in fresh water after pool use
- Use a microfibre wash bag for fine nylon items like hosiery
