Modal
Regenerated cellulose
A type of rayon made from beech tree pulp using a modified viscose process. Softer and more durable than standard viscose, with better wet strength.
Origin & Production
Produced from beech wood pulp, primarily by Lenzing (Austria) under the TENCEL Modal brand. Uses a closed-loop process that recovers most solvents.

- 50% more absorbent than cotton
- Resistant to shrinkage
- Good colour retention
- Stronger than viscose when wet
Common Uses
Sustainability
Lenzing TENCEL Modal uses sustainably managed beech forests and a closed-loop production. Lower environmental impact than standard viscose.
Care Instructions
Machine wash at 30-40 °C on gentle cycle. Modal holds up better in the wash than viscose.
Tumble dry low or line dry. Resistant to shrinkage.
Medium heat (150 °C). Often comes out of the wash smooth enough to skip ironing.
