Polyester

Synthetic

Petroleum-based

The world's most produced fibre. A plastic-based textile (PET) that is durable, wrinkle-resistant, and cheap to produce — dominant in sportswear and fast fashion.

Origin & Production

Synthesised from petroleum-derived ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Melt-spun into filaments or staple fibres. rPET (recycled polyester) uses post-consumer PET bottles.

Key Properties

  • Very durable & wrinkle-resistant
  • Quick drying
  • Retains shape well
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Can feel less breathable

Common Uses

Sportswear & activewearOuterwear & jacketsLiningsBlended with cotton or wool

Sustainability

Derived from fossil fuels and sheds microplastics when washed. Recycled polyester (rPET) diverts plastic bottles but still sheds microfibres. GRS certification tracks recycled content.

Care Instructions

Washing

Machine wash at 30 °C inside-out. Use a microfibre-catching wash bag to reduce microplastic shedding.

Drying

Tumble dry low or hang dry. Dries very quickly.

Ironing

Low heat (110 °C) if needed — usually wrinkle-free. Use a pressing cloth.

Tips
  • Use a Guppyfriend bag or Cora Ball to trap microfibres
  • Wash less frequently — polyester doesn't absorb odours as much as cotton
  • Avoid high dryer heat — can melt or damage the fibre
