Polyamide
Petroleum-based
The chemical family name for nylon fibres. When labelled as 'polyamide' rather than 'nylon', it typically refers to unbranded variants — functionally equivalent in strength, elasticity, and performance.
Origin & Production
Synthesised from petrochemical monomers through polycondensation. Includes nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 variants. Often appears on European care labels where 'polyamide' is the regulatory term for nylon.
Key Properties
- Very strong & abrasion-resistant
- Good elasticity
- Quick drying
- Lightweight
- Smooth & silky hand-feel
Common Uses
Sustainability
Same environmental profile as nylon — petroleum-based, energy-intensive to produce, sheds microplastics. Recycled polyamide (e.g. ECONYL from fishing nets) offers a circular alternative.
Care Instructions
Machine wash at 30 °C on gentle cycle.
Hang dry or tumble dry low. Dries fast.
Low heat (110 °C) if needed. Rarely wrinkles.
- Same care as nylon — they are the same fibre family
- Use a microfibre wash bag for delicate items
- Avoid chlorine — it degrades polyamide fibres
