Lyocell
Regenerated cellulose
A premium regenerated cellulose fibre produced in a closed-loop solvent process. Best known as TENCEL (by Lenzing) — softer than cotton, stronger than viscose, and one of the most sustainable semi-synthetic options.
Origin & Production
Wood pulp (typically eucalyptus) is dissolved in NMMO solvent and spun into fibres. Over 99% of the solvent is recovered and reused. Lenzing's TENCEL brand is the market leader, produced in Austria.
Key Properties
- Exceptionally soft & smooth
- Stronger than viscose (including when wet)
- Highly breathable & moisture-managing
- Gentle on sensitive skin
- Biodegradable
Common Uses
Sustainability
The closed-loop process recovers 99%+ of solvents, making it far cleaner than viscose production. TENCEL uses FSC-certified eucalyptus from sustainably managed plantations. One of the most environmentally responsible manufactured fibres.
Care Instructions
Machine wash at 30 °C on gentle cycle. Lyocell handles washing better than viscose.
Line dry or tumble dry low. Low shrinkage.
Medium heat (150 °C) while slightly damp.
- Can develop a slight peach-fuzz surface (fibrillation) — this is normal and adds to the soft hand-feel
- Enzyme finishes reduce fibrillation if a smoother surface is preferred
- No special detergent needed — lyocell is low-maintenance
