Modacrylic
Modified acrylic
A modified acrylic fibre with built-in flame resistance. Commonly used in faux fur, protective workwear, and children's sleepwear where fire safety is essential.
Origin & Production
Produced by copolymerising acrylonitrile with other monomers (typically vinylidene chloride). The modification gives inherent flame resistance without chemical treatments.
Key Properties
- Inherently flame-resistant
- Soft & fur-like texture
- Resistant to chemicals & solvents
- Low moisture absorption
- Shape-retaining
Common Uses
Sustainability
Petroleum-derived and non-biodegradable. Limited recycling options. However, its flame resistance eliminates the need for chemical flame retardants, which can be toxic.
Care Instructions
Machine wash at 30 °C on gentle cycle. Turn inside-out for faux fur items.
Lay flat or tumble dry on low. Avoid high heat.
Low heat (110 °C) with a pressing cloth. Avoid direct contact.
- Brush faux fur gently after drying to restore loft
- Do not dry clean unless the care label specifically permits it
- Modacrylic is inherently flame-safe — no special treatment needed
